An outdoor classroom at Ettrick Recreation Center
Children learn by looking closely, asking questions, and trying things for themselves. The Village Green will bring that kind of learning outdoors—with a pollinator garden and welcoming space where children and families can explore nature, science, art, and more.
Planned for 2027, the first phase will include raised garden beds planted with native pollinator-friendly species, shade and seating, educational signs, and hands-on learning equipment. Children might observe pollinators, investigate soil and water, draw what they find, or learn through movement and play.
The Village Green will build on learning already happening at Ettrick Recreation Center, including its Backyard Science program. The project is being planned with community input. C-Fit Community is helping connect people, organizations, and resources around the idea.
Project timeline
The current timeline runs from January through December 2027. Planning and preparation are expected to begin in winter, with installation and planting in spring. Programs and community use will continue through the year, with participation and feedback helping shape what comes next.

Help the Village Green grow
There are many ways to take part. We’re looking for volunteer gardeners, event volunteers, and residents willing to share their ideas through surveys and listening-post activities. We also welcome corporate and individual sponsors and contributors.
Grant applications are under consideration. No funding has been awarded yet.
We are exploring possible involvement with Virginia State University, the Concerned Citizens of Ettrick, Chesterfield libraries, and local public schools. These conversations are part of the planning process; partnerships are not yet confirmed.
